I alternated between getting things ready in the basement and more demo in the bathroom. I finally devised the correct technique to persuade the tile to separate from the drywall. I am grateful that "they" did not use the right substrate, i.e., cement board. If they had, I would never have been able to take it off. Since I want to use it in a project later this year, I need the tiles to come off one at a time with as little paper adhering to the back as possible.
Tomorrow I will remove the rest of the tile and drywall.

In the following photo note the lack of a junction box where the wires are joined together. This definitely does not meet the National Electrical Code.

This is the kind of thing that is the bane of a homeowner doing renovation. Opening walls can be bad for one's wallet.
